Overview of IMSE
Industrial Engineering (IE) and Engineering Management (EM) are the perfect fields of study for students interested in design and development of engineering products and systems as well as coordination of human/material/financial resources for improving efficiency, resiliency, and security and creating a greater good for society. Industrial engineers develop models using optimization, simulation, statistics, and machine learning for complex systems representing manufacturing, supply chain and logistics, cyber security, healthcare, energy, transportation, finance, entertainment, and other private and government service sectors. IEs use these models to make engineering decisions for improving design and performance as well as for developing public policies in diverse areas affecting society. Compared to other disciplines in engineering, professional career opportunities of industrial engineers are very broad, which include manufacturing, logistics, technology, healthcare, public health, finance, utility, public services, and government.
IE students find the field's flexibility of career paths/choices very appealing. Strong training of the IEs in data-driven analytical and machine learning tools, together with their ability to understand and align with the broad business view of the engineering decision-making problems place them in high demand for hiring on a variety of teams. BSIE students are actively mentored by faculty to develop skill sets in leadership, community engagement, language, independent research, and global exposure.
Our graduate programs in IE and EM appeal to undergraduate degree holders in practically all disciplines in engineering and the sciences. Those who want to build careers for managing engineering and other business enterprises receive a solid grounding through our MSEM program in basic principles and tools of management including human relations, creativity and change in technology, data-driven decision models in engineering, finance, law, and entrepreneurship. Graduates in the MSIE, MSDI, and PhD programs receive training in complex decision making by integrating data science, machine learning, and optimization models through focused coursework and research. IMSE graduate students are supported to build well-rounded portfolios including refereed publications, patents, professional service, community engagement, leadership, and communication.
