DIVERSITY STATEMENT

MBS is a department at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ that performs world class, translational, biomedical research and training.

"Every facet of the United States scientific research enterprise, from basic laboratory research to clinical and translational research to policy formation, requires superior intellect, creativity and a wide range of skill sets and viewpoints.â€

The National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The NIH, a major source of funding for our research, maintains that our nation will remain a global leader in scientific discovery when talented scientists from diverse backgrounds, including those from underrepresented groups, work together (NIH Notice Number: NOT-OD-20-031). Indeed, fostering diversity by addressing underrepresentation in the scientific research workforce is a key component of the NIH strategy to identify, develop, support and maintain the quality of our scientific human capital (NIH Notice Number: NOT-OD-18-210).

Research, cited by the NIH, shows that diverse teams working together and capitalizing on innovative ideas and distinct perspectives outperform homogenous teams. Scientists and trainees from diverse backgrounds and life experiences bring different perspectives, creativity, and individual enterprise to address complex scientific problems. Therefore, as stewards of the NIH research enterprise, it is our goal to enhance diversity across our department.

Benefits from a diverse scientific workforce, include fostering scientific innovation, enhancing global competitiveness, contributing to robust learning environments, improving the quality of the researchers, advancing the likelihood that underserved or health disparity populations participate in, and benefit from health research, and enhancing public trust.
