USF epidemiologists analyze the prevalence of COVID-19 variants in Tampa Bay
Researchers in the USF College of Public Health are conducting genomic sequencing of positive pooled samples to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 variants in Tampa Bay. This data will be utilized to project how emergent variants could influence the course of the pandemic.

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ has received a $1 million gift to fund research to detect and prevent severe lung scarring. Philanthropist Timothy Ubben made the gift to support research led by his doctor, Jose D. Herazo-Maya, USF Health’s newly appointed associate chief of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

More than 300 miles of coral reefs stretch across Florida’s Atlantic coast. While this marine habitat is home to hundreds of aquatic species and plays an important role in the state’s economy, it is also in danger of disappearing. But a new project from a team of Â鶹ÊÓƵ doctoral students is taking an interdisciplinary approach to protect and restore these vital habitats.

Dramatic decreases in traffic caused by COVID-19 shutdowns improved air quality in car-dependent states but didn’t offset additional forms of pollution in other parts of the country. Those findings by a Â鶹ÊÓƵ researcher suggest that while decreasing the number of vehicles on the road is a good first step toward creating cleaner air, additional measures aimed at reducing other sources of air pollution, such as coal plants or industrial factories, must also be considered.

Congratulations to the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers make NFL history, becoming the first team to win the Super Bowl on their home field. Raymond James Stadium is also home to the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Bulls football team, just one of the many connections between USF and Super Bowl LV.
