Chuanmin Hu, professor of optical oceanography at the USF College of Marine Science (CMS), has been named to the , a professional society of individuals and companies with an interest in optics and photonics.

Hu’s research focuses on the use of optics to address coastal ocean problems such as algal blooms, oil spills, and coastal water quality. According to Optica, Hu was honored for his “significant contributions to ocean optics and remote sensing, particularly for innovative research in algorithms and applications on ocean algae.”

“It is a great honor to be named among Optica’s many outstanding fellows,” said Hu. “I feel privileged to be able to address real world problems through cutting-edge technology in ocean optics and optical remote sensing. This recognition is encouragement to continue my research and benefit the community.”

Over more than 25 years at the CMS, Hu has earned numerous accolades including outstanding faculty mentor awards from USF as well as elected membership to the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida and to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is regularly recognized on a list of high-impact researchers from around the world. , of which Hu serves as director, was recently honored with the prestigious 2024 William T. Pecora Group Award.
