Week 2 – Coral Reef Cake Activity, June 20-21

Maija Alksnitis, Peer

Today campers learned about coral reefs by building one – out of cake! First, the girls learned about the parts of a coral reef – the inner reef, reef crest, and forereef – as well as the plants and animals that live in that habitat. All of the components of the reef were designated as food, and the girls got to make a “coral reef” on a cake, choosing either a cake with a limestone (vanilla) or basalt (chocolate) foundation. Needless to say, the campers thoroughly enjoyed making them. After the peers and counselors voted on the winner of the two groups based on accuracy and aesthetic, it was the campers turn to “bio-erode” these reefs and everybody dug in!
