Saturday night, the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) hosted the FMHI Special Reception and Awards Ceremony to recognize individuals for their dedication to improving the lives of those with mental and addictive disorders through research, training, and education.
Former Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD received the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute Humanitarian Service Award. Before the ceremony, Dr. Satcher met with a group of CBCS faculty and doctoral students to discuss COVID-19 and disparities in health. Dr. Satcher served as the 16th surgeon general of the United States (1998-2002) and the 10th assistant secretary for health in the Department of Health and Human Services (1998-2001).

The Community Leadership Award was presented to Jack Espinosa, Jr., JD for his collaboration with FMHI in the problem solving courts. Espinosa was elected to the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Court in Hillsborough County Florida in 1996, and re-elected in 2008 and 2014.
The Outstanding Behavioral Health Research Faculty Award was presented to Kristin Kosyluk, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy. Kosyluk's research focuses on promoting recovery among people with mental illness, with an emphasis on understanding and addressing stigma as a barrier to recovery.
The Inaugural Bob Friedman Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Sarah Sheffield, MA, a PhD candidate in the Behavioral & Community Sciences program, mental health professional, and peer mentor for the Institute for Translational Research Education in Adolescent Drug Abuse.
