The Ph.D. in Behavioral & Community Sciences prepares individuals for positions as faculty members in universities or researchers in organizations that have a research mission such as federal agencies, state agencies, and private organizations. Employment of postsecondary faculty is expected to increase 17%, particularly in health specialty areas where there is an expected employment increase of 36% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013).
Examples of related jobs posted in the Chronicle of Higher Education in recent months included health research positions; social and behavioral science positions; and over 50 positions in human services, public policy, and closely related educational fields.
There is also a market for Ph.D. graduates outside of university settings. The need for health researchers is expected to increase by 36% (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012). Further, the need for operations research analysts and statisticians who use advanced analytical methods to investigate complex organizational issues, identify and solve problems, and improve decision making is expected to increase by 27%.
