Chae M. Jaynes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology. She received her BA in Economics (2011) and MS in Criminal Justice (2013) from Michigan State University, and her PhD in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland, College Park (2018). Her research focuses on decision-making of various criminal justice system-related actors from a rational choice perspective. For instance, she seeks to understand the role of employment and labor market perceptions in the decision to offend. She also studies the factors which influence a hiring manager's decision to employ someone with a criminal record. Finally, she considers the decision to accept a guilty plea among those who have been charged with a crime.
Through her research, Dr. Jaynes seeks to advance both theory and methodology and provide meaningful policy implications to practitioners. To this end, she works collaboratively with students, colleagues, and community partners to cultivate her research agenda and improve the well-being of those who come into contact with the criminal justice system and society at-large.
