BIO
John N. Gathegi is a Professor in the School of Information at the University of South Florida. His research and teaching focus includes information law and policy, intellectual property rights and emerging information technologies, media law, First Amendment freedom of speech issues, access to legal information for justice and government transparency, information security, and Internet Governance.
Dr. Gathegi earned his PhD (Information Studies), JD (Law) and MA (Political Science) degrees all from the University of California at Berkeley. He has practiced law in California, was previously Director of the School of Library and Information Science at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Dean of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Division at Merritt College in California, and has been a Fulbright Senior Specialist to Chile. He began his teaching career at Florida State University. Dr. Gathegi has also been visiting professor at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, as well as the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He has been a guest lecturer at both Shih Hsin University in Taipei, Taiwan, and Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China. He has travelled to more than 40 countries around the world and given lectures and workshops in more than 15 of them.
