Research
Since completing my doctoral degree at McGill University in 1994, I have published twelve books (one of which has been revised for a second edition, while another one has been issued as an audiobook; three are in Dutch, the rest are in English). Three more books are slated to be published from early 2024 onwards. I tend to research and write on European and World History broadly defined. More specifically, many of my peer-reviewed books and essays address Russian and Soviet history and the history of the Dutch empire. Chronologically, I mainly write about the period since the Renaissance, Reformation, and Cristóbal Colón’s (Cristoforo Colombo’s) landing in the Americas. Thematically, besides the history of communism, capitalism, and imperialism, I write about capitalism, printing and publishing, and the emergence of modernity. You may find below links to podcast-interviews that I have given about some of my books.
My teaching is related to all of these topics. I have been co-advisor or advisor of five students who have successfully defended their doctoral dissertation on a variety of topics.
In addition, I have been editor of The Historian, the peer-reviewed journal published under the auspices of the national History Honors Society Phi Alpha Theta, from 2008 to 2018. As such, I oversaw the publication of myriad articles and book reviews on a great variety of topics, from Korean, Afghan and Central-Asian history to the history of Early Modern England and Early America, US labor history and the history of the Cold War.
