BIOGRAPHY

Sandra C. Roa (M.A. Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism-CUNY) is a storyteller, photographer, and doctoral student in the Department of Communication at the University Â鶹ÊÓƵ. Her scholarly work examines the ways in which narrative mechanisms function, how photography visualizes the lives of others and how stories partner with imagery to create meaning and construct identities. Roa is interested in marginalized communities, personal narratives, and news media as sources of knowledge and advocacy. Her work builds on scholarship that examines the role of storytelling as a vehicle for creating and reinforcing stereotypes and socially constructed notions of race, class, and nation. She draws from her background in journalism and documentary photography to shape her research methods and situates herself at the intersection of producer, subject, and researcher
